Why interoperability between home-gateways and connected devices is so important?

As fiber-to-the-home adoption and deployments continue to grow at an accelerated rate, network service providers (NSPs) are facing a challenge on how to achieve interoperability from head-end equipment all the way to the connected-home gateway. Interoperability issues may cause customer premises equipment (CPE) in the home to not provide the full range of features and functionality the devices have been designed to support.

According to a recent study by Mordor Intelligence, the fiber optic market will experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.26% between 2019 and 2024.

Compliance with open standards such as BBF.247 or TR-255 will help make interoperability easier. However, compliance does not guarantee that hardware, software and services developed by different vendors will work together seamlessly. That is why NSPs need to develop additional testing and monitoring capabilities.

Vantiva Interoperability Lab

At Technicolor we have built a dedicated fiber interoperability laboratory with a team that leverages years of design and field experience in resolving interoperability issues. The team has created test cases on top of the BBF.247 and TR-255 standards — as well as others – to reach full interoperability.

Technicolor is working with NSPs around the world to address interoperability issues across a number of fiber access options — from the very affordable 2.5 gig GPON fiber to the more expensive 10 gig fiber with XGS PON. This will greatly help NSPs in realizing their deployment plans.
